Dave Brubeck was a classically trained pianist who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1951 he formed the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond on alto saxophone. Desmond would eventually compose the following piece, written in 5/4 time. This would go on to be the biggest-selling jazz single of all time.
